A
small friendly community
with a population of 930, located between North Pond and East Pond making
a great vacation spot.
Smithfield was incorporated on February 29, 1840, making it the
only Town in Maine to be founded on Leap Year Day!
The town was made up of part of Mercer, all of East Pond Plantation
and part of Dearborn. On incorporation there were 130 families living in town.
The Abenakis used this area for their hunting and fishing grounds.
It remains a good hunting and fishing spot as well as boating and swimming
in the summer and ice fishing in the winter.
